在比特币发展的早期，批评者们经常将比特币看成是洗钱或购买非法商品的工具。批评者们认为因为该技术是去中
心化、高速及点对点运作的，罪犯们会利用它。你很有可能听说过“丝绸之路网站”，这是一个为非法药物而设的地下网络市场。在2013年10月，丝绸之路最
高曾经有13756个商品是以比特币定价的。上面的产品通常是以邮件运送，还附带了避免被当局检测到的指引。当美国联邦调查局查封了该网站后，比特币的价
格出现暴跌，数字货币也成犯罪的代名词。那是比特币最黑暗的日子。
不过，与其他技术相比，比特币或
区块链技术对犯罪分子所提供的便利其实也没有什么独特之处。有关的权力机构整体上相信数字货币可以通过提供一份可以活动的记录而辅助执法机构，甚至解决一
系列涉及金融服务和物联网的网络犯罪。《未来犯罪》（Future
Crimes）的作者马克·古德曼最近称，“从未有一个计算机系统被证实为不可入侵的”。59 技术的发展也伴随着犯罪机会的增加。“一个人能够影响很多人的能力正在呈指数式增长趋势，而这其中有着良性和恶性的案例。”60 所以问题最终是关于人之间的互相伤害。犯罪分子会使用最新的技术去做这些事情。

过，比特币和区块链可能会制约犯罪的用途。首先，犯罪分子也得将所有的比特币交易在区块链上公开，这样执法机构可以追踪比特币的付款，这比现金的追踪更简
单。水门事件引出的“通过对钱的追踪找到坏人”的箴言实际上在区块链上更具备可行性（相比于其他的支付方式）。比特币的假名性质让监管者们有了可在将来用
于起诉的信息，因为比特币比现金有更强的可追踪性。
在美国发生每一场大型的枪击事件后，美国国家步
枪协会的持证会员代表很快就会说，“不要将美国的涉枪暴力怪罪到枪支头上！”如果是同样的一群人因其他人可能在区块链上实施的罪行而禁止区块链技术的话，
那么确实会很有意思。技术并没有立场，它没有任何需求，也没有任何倾向。金钱也是某种形式的技术，当一个人抢劫了银行后，我们并不会怪罪“是金钱自己在保
险箱里等着来抢”。罪犯对比特币的使用更多是与强力治理机制、监管、倡导及教育的缺失相关，而不是比特币的底层特性。
